EMC Express Care First Medical Facility in the Nation to Accept Litecoin and Dogecoin

Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Dogecoin are non-bank issued digital currencies with real advantages, like far lower transaction costs compared to the checks, credit and debit cards that we also accept.

EMC Express Care began accepting Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and Litecoin for medical payments in January of 2013.

This leading-edge approach to payments was initiated by Frank Genco, MD, Medical Director at EMC Express Care. EMC joins the ranks of other businesses accepting Bitcoin including Amazon.com, Overstock.com and possibly soon the US Post Office. Dr. Genco realized that digital currency is likely the currency of the future.

Cryptocurrencies, are safer, faster and less expensive than many traditional means of payment. Digital currencies are secured using cryptography, a technique used to protect information and verify ownership. Bitcoin users can store and send currency to anyone who also owns an account called a “wallet” without disclosing their private information. This protects people from identity theft.

Because banks and financial institutions are not involved in the process, transactions do not involve personal information being exchanged. Compared to checks or credit cards where transfers can take a week or longer to clear, digital currency transfers are fast and occur in minutes. Additionally, there are minimal costs involved with a transfer of digital currency for merchants compared to credit cards.

“We are always looking for ways to keep our wait times low and our costs low for the benefit of our patients.” said Dr. Genco.

“At EMC, a patient is evaluated by a board certified physician, not a physician extender, with the added bonus of charges being a fraction of the cost of hospital or freestanding ERs.”

Dr Genco believes that digital currencies are another step in streamlining the process of the medical encounter to save money and time and increase privacy.
