Cryptocoin Mining has Caused a Worldwide Shortage of AMD Radeon Graphics Cards (GPU)

Bright Side of News recently published an article entitled: LiteCoins is Causing Shortages of AMD Radeon GPUs. Right... Well... I'm 110% sure that it is Litecoin not LiteCoin, the same way that it is Bitcoin not BitCoin. In fact, it's the same way that Eurodollars are not EuroDollars, so even in that hazy circumstance where the etymological components of the compound word are both indubitably proper nouns... Grammar must prevail. Additionally, the article only references these "cryptocurrencies" which is provided by Wikipedia, and it underestimates the total number of different cryptocoins....

Litecoin mining: Radeon GPU shortage reported

Bitcoin miners long ago moved up from GPU mining to ASIC mining in response to algorithm difficulty. But GPU mining still gets the job done for Litecoin’s algorithm, and a number of outlets are reporting a shortage of Radeon GPU graphic cards. This could be coincidence, or there could be a real correlation. The Litecoin mining has taken off in recent months, with the currency’s hashrate doubling in the last month. It’s hashing difficulty followed suit. Still, that hashrate is perfectly suitable for GPU mining (the ease of mining is one of Litecoin’s differentiating factors, after all), and....

Radeon GPUs in Demand as Litecoin Mining Difficulty Increases

Bitcoin mining on a standard GPU is a thing of the past. Put simply: it's no longer economically viable, given the power consumption of discrete graphics cards and their relatively high price. ASICs are a no-brainer when it comes to bitcoin, however litecoin is a different story. Unlike its counterpart, litecoin can still be mined using off-the-shelf hardware, namely via AMD Radeon graphics cards. There aren't that many alternatives, either. There are still no ASIC products for scrypt, litecoin's algorithm, and this will not change for the next few months at least. It is rumoured that....

New Radeon Launches Just in Time for No Miner to Care

Having launched its fastest graphics card to date on Tuesday, AMD will find few takers among scrypt miners, argues Nermin Hajdarbegovic. AMD's new card is pricey and designed with enthusiasts in mind, so few miners will be willing to pay the premium for an elaborate hybrid cooler. What's more, an increasing number of scrypt miners are looking beyond Radeon graphics processing units (GPUs) for their mining needs. With that in mind, the dual-GPU Radeon R9 295X2 is starting to sound like a swan song for GPU mining, at least as far as scrypt goes. Meet the R9 295X2, AMD's new flagship. The....

AMD 'could be devastated' by Mining

AMD Radeon is driving mining. In an article published today, Daily Finance argues that cryptocurrency mining may be hampering development at AMD. The AMD flagship graphics card, Radeon R9 290X, is a hard-to-find commodity out there. Online retailers such as NewEgg and Amazon either list it as 'Out of Stock' or 'Special Order'. Trying to find any half-decent AMD graphics card at a Bitcoin-centric retailer is futile. They're just not available - and when one is for sale - it is priced at a premium. Everyone knows: these pieces of high-grade technology are the heart of the best - and most....

Nvidia to Lower Crypto Mining Hashrates on GPUs to Address Current Mining Frenzy

In an effort to address the ongoing silicon supply shortage and bloated GPU prices, hardware manufacturer Nvidia is set to reduce the hashrates on its latest GeForce graphics cards to disincentivize miners.  In an announcement yesterday, the California-based company said that its latest graphics cards, which are set to begin shipping in late May, will […]
