Classic Fork Release Launches Consensus Hysteria

We’ve had a few days to see effects of Bitcoin Classic’s late beta release, and they’re surprisingly powerful. In the past week, Coinbase has adopted Classic, and Bitcoin Classic nodes on the network have jumped from around a hundred to 755 active nodes (as of the time of writing) — nearly 13% of the network, and that number is still climbing. This growth brings the total number of nodes supporting a 2MB block size to a little under 18%. Not enough to make 2MB consensus the majority Bitcoin branch, but sizeable nonetheless. What exactly this growth will result in is unclear, but it may....

Ethereum Classic to Get a Hard Fork of Its Own

Ethereum Classic is all set to get a hard fork of its own soon to counter the sustained DOS attack. Ethereum Classic is on its way to get a hard fork in the next two days. Ethereum recently split into two blockchains following a hard fork introduced by the Ethereum development team a few months ago. The hard fork resulted in two versions — Ethereum (ETH) and Ethereum Classic (ETC). While Ethereum continued to operate on the new fork, a portion of the cryptocurrency community decided to continue with the original Ethereum blockchain, calling it Ethereum Classic. Why Ethereum Classic Must Die

The ongoing ethereum classic drama is yet another illustration of the great irony of cryptocurrency – a technology invented as a way to form consensus keeps facing its greatest threat from the inability of its communities to form it. When there's a fork, it's important for the community to choose wisely between the two branches. But it's also important, often more important, for the community to converge on one branch. In a case like ethereum, which now has two competing versions, ethereum (ETH) and ethereum classic (ETC), not converging will do more harm than converging on the inferior....
