Many are familiar with Bitcoin – a digital currency using peer-to-peer payment technology that involves no central authority or bank. Sound futuristic? Consider that entire towns and countries are using bitcoin to make payments large and very small, locally and globally.

Bitcoin and its infrastructure, blockchain, are attracting the interest of major VCs, governments and NGOs. This event brings together leading figures shaping the direction of bitcoin and blockchain and our panel will discuss their vision of a Blockchain World – how it will unfold and the impact it will have both on traditional financial institutions and individuals.

Michael Casey

Senior Adviser, Blockchain Opportunities, Digital Currency Initiative, MIT Media Lab
Michael Casey, previously a senior columnist for the WSJ, joined MIT Media Lab’s center for Digital Currency Initiative as an advisor last summer to build awareness around digital currencies and the underlying blockchain technology.

He is well known to the blockchain community, co-authoring the critically acclaimed book, The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and Digital Money are Challenging the Global Economic Order, as a frequent public speaker, discussing digital currency themes and applications for the blockchain ledger and advising institutions on how to understand the challenges and opportunities that are emerging from this disruptive, decentralizing technology.  He is also exploring dedicated research projects that use this emerging technology to achieve social impact goals.

Marco Santori

Partner, Pillsbury Law
Marco Santori, attorney is the leader of the Firm’s Digital Currency and Blockchain Technology focus team. Recently described by American Banker as “the Dean of Digital Currency Lawyers,” Marco is a recognized authority in the law of digital currencies and emerging blockchain technologies. He counsels banks, broker-dealers, exchanges, wallets, payment processors, institutional miners, and others making new uses of distributed ledger technology.

As Chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation’s Regulatory Affairs Committee, his knowledge of the latest industry trends develops in nearreal-time. The winner of the first annual Blockchain Award for Bitcoin Legal Expert, Marco is fluent in the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Patriot Act’s application to digital currency businesses, including Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulation. He has been profiled by the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Washington Post, The New Yorker, Wired, Entrepreneur.com and Crain’s New York Business.

Fredrik Voss

Vice President, Blockchain Innovation, Nasdaq, New York
Fredrik re-joined Nasdaq in 2008 as the Vice President Blockchain Innovation where he is responsible for Nasdaq’s blockchain innovation initiative. In this role he is advising the C-suite on corporate objectives and strategies for Nasdaq’s activities in the blockchain space and also responsible for implementation and communication of approved strategies.

Frederik previously held positions as Deputy Head of Nasdaq Commodities and leading market development for the Intercontental Exchange in London.  He also  worked at Nasdaq’s predecessor OMX from 1995 where he managed various business units supplying exchange and clearing solutions to deregulated electricity markets and attended the Stockholm School of Economics.

George Prokop

Managing Director, Strategic Threat Management and Corporate Intelligence, PwC
George W. Prokop co-leads the Strategic Threat Management and Corporate Intelligence practices at PricewaterhouseCoopers and is a senior leader in a variety of client and internal PwC initiatives related to bitcoin and blockchain innovation. 

As a senior practitioner in PwC’s Anti-Corruption Centre of Excellence, George advises clients in the public and private sector on leading practices in managing governance, risk, and compliance to identify and mitigate threats. Mr. Prokop recently co-authored PwC’s paper “Money is no object: Understanding the evolving cryptocurrency market” and serves on the Advisory Board of the Association of Certified Financial Crime Specialists and he is a member of the American Bar Association, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and the Turnaround Management Association.  Mr. Prokop earned an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.

John Burnett

Vice President, Global Strategy; Emerging Technologies at State Street
John Burnett is leading the effort to explore the application of Blockchain technology across State Street, within the recently formed Emerging Technologies Center.  Prior to joining State Street, he was Director of Competitive and Marketplace Strategy; Enterprise Growth Strategy and Innovation Group at American Express.

John holds an MBA from The Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and an M.A. and B.A, Business Economics from the University of California, at Santa Barbara. In mining we trust. On the side of the US $1 bill it says "In God, we trust". Because money is all about trust. Trust that it's real, trust that it will remain at a similar value for the duration of the transaction at least, trust that the products are represented honestly.
