Mt. Gox's Lesson in Logic, the ATM that Doesn't Exist, and Tips for the Future

Welcome to the CoinDesk Weekly Review 21st February 2014 - a regular look at the hottest, most thought-provoking and most controversial events in the world of digital currency through the eyes of scepticism and wonder. Your host ... John Law. Unfair exchange of views. John Law is nothing if not internationally minded, which doesn't seem to come naturally to many. He is much amused by the knots his fellow Britons tie themselves in when they try to work out whether they should be in the European Union ("NO!" cry many on the right) or whether Scotland should leave the UK ("NO!", they wail....

Bitcoin must charm regulators, says professor

A British business school professor believes Bitcoin needs to go on a charm offensive to win over worried national regulators. Professor of Practice at Warwick Business School Jon Rushman said Bitcoin could have a permanent role amongst world currencies but only if it wins over regulators. Rushman told HedgeWeek: "Bitcoin needs to work harder on explaining its philosophy and on regulation, they need to do a bit of a charm offensive with the regulators and make them comfortable with it while being true to their principles." The prof, a former MD at BlackRock, said it was possible to imagine....

ChangeTip Brings Bitcoin Tipping to Social Media Cynics

Bitcoin micropayments startup ChangeTip has introduced a new feature that lets users receive tips without a social media account. Currently, ChangeTip users can tip one another via accounts linked to their social networks, including Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr and GooglePlus. However, One Time Tip Link now allows registered users to send bitcoin tips directly to a person's email address, using a one-time link. Email or text tips. In fact, the recipient does not even have to have an email, as users can send tips via Skype or any kind of messaging service. This obviously expands the potential of....

The future of everyday life with digital currencies

A QR code (Quick Response Code) like this may be the future of digital currency. When scanned with a mobile device, a QR code can be used to send and receive digital currency. A few weeks ago, I saw a funny comic. The comic portrayed a thief who demands a woman's money. She says she only has bitcoins, and the thief doesn't understand. He asks her to give it to him, but she explains that it's not tangible and that she needs his bitcoin wallet address. Upon learning that he doesn't have a wallet, she helps him set one up. Will this be the future of theft? Will thieves hold people up until....

Snowden, narcs and Swedish chips: Bitcoin loves them all

Welcome to the CoinDesk Weekly Review 28th June 2013 - a regular look at the hottest, most controversial and thought-provoking events in the world of digital currency through the eyes of skepticism and wonder. Your host ... John Law. The name's Hill. Benny Hill. Secrets ain't what they used to be. A spook of John Law's acquaintance used to have the James Bond theme as their ringtone; after Edward Snowden's traipse around the world, skipping merrily out of reach of the CIA, NSA and GCHQ, it's probably been replaced by Benny Hill. For those who like to peer into the future of bitcoin,....

The Mystery of the Missing 1,000,000 NXT

In a series that I hope I rarely have to write, I cast a light on the somewhat unsavory elements that exist in our burgeoning eco-system. My hope being that such elements cannot survive the light of day. That by merely exposing their actions we can in some way diminish the upside of partaking in them. However, to quote the great Mr. Moustafa himself: “When the destiny of a great fortune is at stake, men's greed spreads like a poison in the bloodstream.”Now this brings us to our very first case dealing with the now notorious “Blue Meanie” aka Joshua Zeidner of Altchain. I stumbled upon this....
