Ten Bitcoin Companies Support Charities with the Bitcoin Cup

Ten Bitcoin companies have joined together to sponsor the 2014 Bitcoin Donation Cup, a global community donation program which provides a seamless way for fans around the world to donate bitcoin to a participating charity of their choice. The sponsoring companies include BitGive and BitPay from the United States, Mercado Bitcoin from Brasil; Altis, MexBT and Bitso from Mexico; Colombia Bitcoin Foundation and the Fundacion Bitcoin de Argentina.

By scanning QR codes on signs held by fans watching the games in Brasil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and the United States, donors have the chance to give bitcoin to help both fans and charities. Thirty percent of the donation goes towards supporting the fans holding the QR codes with a meal, game tickets, or lodging. The remaining 70% goes directly towards a participating charity of choice.

Leveraging the open nature of bitcoin, donors will also have the opportunity to track their donations in real-time for the duration of the program. Information on how to participate is available online at bitcoincup.org or join us at facebook, to share pictures and likes of this great event.

“It's amazing to see bitcoin users around the world support not only our cause but many other charities,” said Connie Gallippi, Founder and Executive Director of BitGive.

The BitGive Foundation is a charitable giving organization whose mission is to leverage the power of the Bitcoin community to improve public health and the environment worldwide. BitGive works to demonstrate the social value of Bitcoin through charitable campaigns and partnerships to reach the developing and third world.

Through BitPay, donations can be made to many different charities with ease. Due to bitcoin’s minuscule transactions fees and BitPay’s continued support by offering free payment processing for 501(c)3 charities, donations made through the Bitcoin Cup are not eroded by processing fees.

“This is a great opportunity for BitPay to support many important charities throughout the world while introducing bitcoin to fans throughout South America,” said Albert Vega, BitPay’s Regional Manager for Latin America.
