Dogecoins pouring in for Jamaican bobsled team

UPDATE: The team got funded. According to the official Crowdtilt donations page, some $120,000 has been raised. Dogecoins represent a quarter of that total. The Dogecoin Foundation saw more than 27 million XDG donated, and all the activity actually doubled the value of the currency in about 24 hours. Given Dogecoin's instability these last two days, the foundation actually had to exchange the money into Bitcoin before a donation in USD could be made. Here’s how to Internet like a pro: Take a story that elicits images of a beloved movie from childhood (“Cool Runnings”) and somehow find a....

Wow. So crypto. Much profits. As reported earlier today, the Dogecoin community was able to raise over $30,000 worth of dogecoins in an effort to get the Jamaican bobsled team to the Sochi Olympics. The Jamaican bobsleigh team has received more than $30,000 worth of dogecoins from what can only be described as a community meme-loving bobsleigh enthusiasts. Technically the team has not qualified for the Sochi Olympics yet, but the team's pilot Winston Watts is confident that his guys will make it through. It’s time to take Dogecoin seriously

I was wrong about Dogecoin. Back in December, when the cryptocurrency first launched, I wrote: “And God help us all, Dogecoins are actually being mined and traded for monetary value. [...] Expect the Doge meme to burn out soon. In the meantime, though, why not ride the wave during Bitcoin’s swoon (at the time of writing, Bitcoin has just dipped below 500 USD)?” Having spent the previous months covering more “serious” currencies such as Bitcoin, it gave me a headache to have to read all the “Wow. So profit.” captions under photos of that fuzzy dog. The whole thing just seemed like an awful....

Dogecoin-funded Jamaican bobsled team recovers lost equipment

Jamaica had overcome its 12-year drought in Olympic bobsledding, finally qualified, and raised the money needed to get to Sochi. Team #CoolRunnings was in business. Then, someone lost their equipment. Their luggage, the runners for the sled and their sliding gear were all lost in transit. As a result, the team was unable to make its practice run Wednesday. And 46-year-old Winston Watts, who came out of retirement to compete in these games, was stuck with only his track suit to wear until the rest of his clothes go to Sochi.
