French Senate to Hold Hearing on Virtual Currencies Next Week
In a meeting expected to take place on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 10AM at the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, France, the French Senate will hold a joint hearing to discuss issues relating to the development of virtual currencies, such as bitcoin. The announcement was made on the Senate's website, and notes this will be an open-press event. The following individuals will be in attendance: Ms. Delphine Amarzit, (Head of the financing of the economy of the Treasury Department). Mr. Denis Beau, Chief Operating Officer at the Bank of France. M. Jean-Baptiste Carpentier, Director of Treatment....

As announced last week, the French Senate met today in Paris to hold a hearing on bitcoin, it's benefits, and it's downsides. Reddit.com user 'mmitech' took the opportunity to post notes about what took place at the meeting the meeting here. According to the user's bullet points, it would appear as if the French government is keen to "catch up" with bitcoin. They don't clearly understand it yet, nor do they know how they'll regulate it, but they've recognized at this juncture that banning the digital currency is not an option. The price of bitcoin spiked dramatically last night and the transaction volume on the Bitcoin protocol (in USD) eclipsed that of Western Union. The spike took place after Jerry Brito, Patrick Murck and Jeremy Allaire presented their testimonies on bitcoin and the future of virtual currencies to the Homeland Security and Governmental affairs committee in the US senate at the Senate hearing titled Beyond Silk Road: Potential Risks, Threats and Promises of Virtual Currencies. It was refreshing to see a Senate hearing kick off half an hour early for a change, and in a place with far more sitting room than room 538 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
