Large Canadian ecommerce firm Coastal Contacts has announced that it is adopting bitcoin as a payment mechanism. The firm, which conducts its sales online, will begin accepting the currency within months, it said. Founded in 2000, Burnaby, BC-based Coastal specialises in direct-to-consumer sales, cutting out intermediaries in markets that have traditionally relied on them. Yet another large online retailer is announcing their support for bitcoin payments. This time around it's the folks at Coastal.com, a NASDAQ-listed eyewear company established in 2000. The company announced Tuesday plans to begin accepting bitcoin in the next few months, making them the first major eyewear company in the space to do so. Personally, I am surprised that an American museum is the first place that such an innovation would occur and I hope for many copycats around the world shortly. Square CEO Jack Dorsey has issued new statements suggesting that the mobile payments giant may seek to add bitcoin to its Register product.
