BitPay has recently created Bitcore, based on removing centralized API systems and allows apps to interact directly with the Bitcoin network itself. This allows apps to continue working even if the server hosting the API goes down, and allows more decentralization. Bitcore uses node.js, which is a Javascript runtime.
