The first academic workshop to feature peer-reviewed research on bitcoin took place last week. The 1st Workshop on Bitcoin Research (aka BITCOIN 14), which was held on 7th March, was part of a larger week-long conference, FC14. The event was put on by the International Financial Cryptography Association, which has been organizing financial cryptography and data security conferences for the past 18 years. Yesterday the Pirate Bay was raided by Swedish police and taken down. This isn't the first time that the Pirate Bay is taken down by the police, and my guess is that the site will be back soon, but the raid shows that a free Web with central point failures can't survive the mounting wave of joint attacks by governments and large corporations.
