It's been a pretty frustrating weekend for users of the popular LocalBitcoins.com. On Saturday, the site - which allows users from around the world to buy and sell bitcoins from other nearby users - went down quite suddenly. Shortly thereafter, the company released information indicating the outage related to a possible hardware issue. On Sunday, much progress hadn't been made. At approximately 10:30 AM, the company announced via their Twitter feed that it would be at least another eight hours until recovery - but that proved to be an understatement. LocalBitcoins users took to reddit and official LocalBitcoins forums today (17th April), reporting that some bitcoin wallets managed by the company have been emptied, and that transactions have been delayed. The Finland-based bitcoin buying and selling service has now issued an official response to these claims via its blog, stating that the problem is likely the result of a malware intrusion. In the post, LocalBitcoins announced it would limit hot wallet activity on its services while it addresses the issue. It's unclear what is causing the downtime, but for some folks, full-on panic mode has kicked in. As of this writing, we were presented with the following technical problem message: "An unrecoverable technical error has occured. Global bitcoin marketplace LocalBitcoins is operating again following over six hours of downtime it attributed to a 'hardware failure'. The company announced the outage at 20:22 UTC yesterday. By 03:02 it said the service was 'back up and running', though it appears some site functionality - including user logins - is still problematic. LocalBitcoins community manager 'Max' told Reddit the problem was related to the company's servers: "It seems a server got hung up ... We're about to move to new equipment as the current servers are quite old, sad that they had to crash before we moved."....
