In the last week we have witnessed sell orders of more than 1000 bitcoins at a time pushing the Bitcoin price downwards. The Bitcoin price has fallen from a stable 590 USD per Bitcoin (August 10th) to now 450 USD per Bitcoin. There have been no recent negative news or happenings that could explain the big sell offs, and one might start to wonder. I've recently written a few theories of why the Bitcoin price has crumbled while Venzen wrote about BitFinex' "shorting" function. The fourth quarter of 2016 was a volatile period for the price of bitcoin, as speculation climbed to new heights and exchange-traded volume reached peak levels, according to data provider Bitcoinity. Even before bitcoin approached $1,000 at the end of Q4, a record 114m bitcoins were exchanged in the month of October alone. The record was shattered in the following month with 175m bitcoins traded in November, followed by a slight downtick in December with 170m bitcoins exchanging hands. El Salvador bought the dip as the price of bitcoin plunged to a record low. President Nayib Bukele said Friday that his country has purchased 410 more bitcoins. The Salvadoran government has bought a total of 1,801 bitcoins since the cryptocurrency was made legal tender in the country.
