Bitcoin in Bloom: How IBLTs Allow Bitcoin to Scale
Bitcoin Chief Scientist Gavin Andresen believes a new data structure, Invertible Bloom Lookup Tables (IBLTs), could realign the interests of miners with the rest of the network. Currently, Bitcoin miners have an incentive to keep blocks as small as possible. The smaller the block, the faster it spreads across the payment network. The faster a block spreads, the sooner the network accepts it. Two valid blocks mined by different operators at the same time enter a race to see which block can reach the most nodes the fastest. The first block to reach the majority of the network wins. The other....

Bitcoin requires decentralization of miners (or mining pools) and full nodes to achieve what some consider its core property: censorship resistance. As such, the block-size dispute represents a trade-off. Bigger blocks allow for more transactions on the Bitcoin network, but take more time to propagate, favoring larger miners and pools, while the increased data transmission disincentivizes users to run full nodes. Fortunately, there are proposals to increase Bitcoin's efficiency that reduce the risk of bigger blocks. One of the most promising innovations in this regard, are Invertible Bloom....
Security is of the utmost importance when suggesting newer technologies on a large scale, and a proposal is made to present bloom filters to lightweight clients through semi-trusted oracles. Bitcoin developers are always looking to add new features and improvements to the many available wallet solutions. The introduction of committed bloom filters will be a significant milestone for privacy as the BIP37 SPV solution needs to be reworked. For Bitcoin users who have been embracing the lightweight client model, there are some issues associated with BIP37 SPV in its current implementation.....
Downloading the Bitcoin blockchain is about to become a lot easier, ending a common complaint that users have about the barrier of entry to using Bitcoin software. With this new feature, new users can be fully synced with Bitcoin Core closer to 4 hours, as opposed to 2 days on an average internet connection. The common complaint about Bitcoin is that the start-up time in getting set up with the original BitcoinQT client. Previously, in order to run a full node, the Bitcoin client requires a complete copy of the Bitcoin blockchain (22 GB at the time of writing). One bootstrap solution has....
