Counterparty, the technology for decentralized financial tools on the Bitcoin blockchain, has started running Ethereum smart contracts by porting the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) to its codebase. In late 2014, Counterparty added their support to execute the Ethereum smart contracts platform on Bitcoin; however, at that time, Ethereum was in its pre-alpha stage of development, with its first major release, Frontier, not yet being announced. Of course, with both Frontier, and later, the release of Homestead in late February, the developers at Counterparty have witnessed the EVM growing....
In reply to yesterday's announcement of Ethereum cloning by Counterparty, Ethereum's co-founder Joseph Lubin commented on a Reddit discussion. He said: "Ethereum will ultimately (March 2015 release scheduled) be more general, elegant and powerful. Ethereum, when released, will be 100% feature-free. Instead of providing a handful of hard-coded features, Ethereum is a decentralized application programming, deployment and utilization platform which will enable developers to build any 'features' they can conceive of." Lubin quoted Ethereum CCO, Stephan Tual, who said: "It went from 'ethereum....
Update: This article has been edited slightly to clarify that Ethereum's entire programming language has been ported to Counterparty In a major development in the Bitcoin 2.0 race, Counterparty has added the open-sourced custom smart contract features of Ethereum by porting the programming language to the Counterparty platform. While smart contracts have always been possible on Counterparty, they lacked the flexibility and ease of customization found in the Ethereum project. That extra functionality, previously only found in Ethereum, was often attributed by observers of only being....
