The US Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recently held a meeting on Bitcoin. The public meeting was held by the CFTC's Global Markets Advisory Committee (GMAC) and was sponsored by CFTC Commissioner Mark P Wetjen. The meeting was first called in September to discuss whether or not the CFTC has jurisdiction over Bitcoin derivatives. The CFTC was joined by expert panelists including Coin Center's Jerry Brito, Law Professor Houman Shadab, TeraExchange's founder Leonard Nuara, and BitPay's Chief Compliance Officer Tim Byun. TeraExchange, a New Jersey-based swap execution facility announced Thursday the completion of the first bitcoin derivatives transaction on a regulated exchange. The maiden transaction was completed between digitalBTC and a hedging counterparty. Bitcoin is now a commodity according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). On Thursday the organization publicly stated it had settled with a Bitcoin exchange for trading option contracts after an enforcement case against a Bitcoin operator. "In this order, the CFTC for the first time finds that Bitcoin and other virtual currencies are properly defined as commodities," according to the press release.
