Ethereum Issues Security Alert After Fork, Transactions May Be Reverted

Following a consensus flaw in Geth, the lead developer for Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin has issued a high security alert based on an issue that was identified with Geth’s journaling mechanism which caused a network fork at block #2686351 - Nov. 24, 2016 at 14:12:07 UTC. In a post, Buterin noted that the Geth 1.5.3 has been released for users to update the Blockchain from the point of the fork, even if it has synced past the point of the fork. He states: “If you do not update, please be aware you will be on an invalid chain that is not supported...We continue to recommend that exchanges and....

Ethereum’s Soft Fork Called Off as it Introduces a New Attack Vector

The DAO debacle continues, after the miner community voted in favor of a protocol soft fork, a new vulnerability introduced by the update has caused the support to the fork to be withdrawn. Geth's 1.4.8 version could allow an attacker to SPAM and effectively freeze the whole Ethereum network. The Ethereum Foundation has introduced a new Geth client version (1.4.9) that rolls back the changes made in the previous soft-fork-enabled software. A security alert was issued by Ethereum Foundation. In the announcement, the developer Felix Lange explained: An attack vector has been identified in....

Ethereum Undergoes Unintentional Hard Fork

Ethereum has forked again, only this time, the event was unintentional. 2016 has been a rough year for the Bitcoin competitor. Things began in July after Ethereum enforced a hard fork following a DAO hack that ultimately cost the platform over $50 million in Ether funds. While the hard fork was supposed to bring people into a “new era” of Ethereum, customers reverted back to mining the original chain, and the work of the Ethereum executives went relatively unappreciated. The currency is now split into a newer wave of currency along with Classic Ethereum, leading to two separate entities.....

Ethereum Hard Fork Should Be An Unbiased Community Decision

A lot of people are expressing their concern over the Ethereum fork idea. Decision-making of such proportions should be left to the community, rather than a handful of developers. The Ethereum ecosystem is still in a state of flux after the attacks against The DAO. It has become apparent the goal is to execute either a soft or hard fork to resolve this situation. But Peter Todd argues that forking is not the right way to solve this situation. A lot of people still seem to confuse The DAO with Ethereum and vice versa. The DAO is a project on top of the Ethereum platform, and Ether is the....

Ethereum's Fourth Fork: So Far, So Good

So far, developers are calling 'Spurious Dragon' a success. Ethereum's latest hard fork, officially activated at block 2,675,000 today, comes days after the code was first tested as a solution to ongoing network performance issues. Among other changes, the fork will give developers the ability to delete empty accounts left by an unknown attacker that had effectively flooded the network. While generally seen as a dangerous way to upgrade a blockchain (since it can lead to a network split if the proposed changes aren't accepted by everyone), ethereum's developers have embraced hard forks as....

Cardano (ADA) Price Remains Low Despite Buzz Around Vasil Hard Fork

Talk around the Cardano (ADA) Vasil hard fork has been circulating in the crypto space for the last month. The hard fork which was supposed to go live back in June had been rescheduled to July due to security issues but that has in no way reduced the enthusiasm around the hard fork. The new date was set for the end of July and as the day draws closer, the community has been buzzing with excitement. However, this has failed to translate to its price. The Cardano Vasil Hard Fork The growth of the Cardano network has made it a necessity for it to be upgraded and IOG, the developer behind....
