At the very least, a trio of UK-based electronic retail websites have been inundated with DDoS attacks by hackers holding the websites to ransom in exchange for Bitcoin. The websites have suffered temporary outage and have since put up a bounty to round up on the bitcoin-seeking attackers. BTCC, the Shanghai, China-based digital currency exchange, suffered a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, the company noted on Dec. 31, 2015, on Twitter. The attack hampered BTCC’s access to its APIs and other services for a period of time. Bitcoin exchange BTE-C has reported via its official Twitter account that it is, at this time, experiencing a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack that may or may not be affecting all services. The uncertainty comes from the lack of explanation from BTC-E. The tweet, which only reads "DDos #btce" (pictured above), seemingly speaks for itself, however. Bitcoin exchanges are often targets of DDOS attacks, but many have learned to deal with these situations as a result of being victims multiple times (see Mt. Gox).
