Ethereum Payment Channels Could Enter Production in 2017

A project aiming to scale ethereum via off-blockchain payment channels could enter production this year. Speaking at Construct 2017, CoinDesk's developer conference this week, Ameen Soleimani, a software engineer at ethereum startup ConsenSys, gave a presentation on Raiden's current status in which he described this as a 2017 goal. The Raiden network, an open-source developer effort being spearheaded by developer Heiko Hees, was first discussed as a way to bring micropayments to the platform in 2015. Soleimani said work on the protocol implementation is "largely finished", adding....

A Solution for Trustless Bitcoin Microtransactions Is Here

In a recent video released by software engineer James Poole, the demonstration of micropayment channels shows how Bitcoin can be used for transactions in amounts as small as a fraction of a penny. In fact, micropayment channels can make microtransactions denominated in satoshis much more practical in the real world. Right now, it costs roughly $0.04 to broadcast a transaction on the Bitcoin network. While this is much cheaper than other payment networks, sending one satoshi becomes rather impractical. With a micropayments channel, a Bitcoin user can setup a trustless environment with a....

R3 Director: 2017 is the Year of the DLT Pilot

While DLT technologies are moving slowly toward production, an executive from blockchain consortium R3 is hinting that this might not be the defining trend for enterprises this year. In remarks yesterday at CoinDesk’s developer conference, Construct 2017, R3 associate director and former Credit Suisse blockchain architect, Clemens Wan, predicted that 2017 will be defined by DLT pilots, while 2018 will see the technology migrate to production. The comments come just months after the open-source release of its custom distributed ledger technology (DLT), Corda, became a part of the Linux....

Ethereum May Spring Surprises in 2017

Despite the hurdles facing the platform, the Ethereum network could end up emerging stronger and accomplish the milestones it set out to achieve in 2017, especially those related to smart contracts. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, in his paper “Opportunities and Challenges for Private and Consortium Blockchains” released by the R3 Consortium earlier this year, highlighted some of the milestones, which include: Serenity (‘Ethereum 1.5’): the release of the proof of stake (Casper) version of the Blockchain, also including Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) 101 and 105. Expected....

2017: When Ethereum Will Go From IT to Enterprise

Enterprise use of blockchain technology has evolved at an almost unfathomable rate over the past 24 months. From early bitcoin experiments, to senior bankers joining startups, to the launch of the public ethereum decentralized application platform, to the many private, permissioned systems using the technology, blockchain has emerged as one of the top enterprise IT trends entering 2017. Yet, the market has already moved beyond the incubation phase where innovators effectively build the technology along with their initial applications, and possibly beyond the early adopter phase, too.....
