New private messaging app claims to be decentralized and quantum-resistant

David Chaum has launched a new private messaging system that claims it can keep message data and information about its users secure against the most powerful computers. The new private messaging app called ‘xx messenger’ has been developed by renowned cryptographer David Chaum and it claims to be quantum-resistant.The messenger claims to be quantum-resistant, making it able to shield message content from all currently known decryption efforts. This would protect sender, receiver, and their location data from being intercepted or tracked by unwelcome interlopers. The app is now available on....

According to the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), while quantum computers are incapable of breaking public key encryption algorithms, public and private entities need to prepare for future threats against cryptography that is not quantum resistant. Most of today’s digital communications, including cryptocurrencies, leverage public key encryption and CISA believes when “quantum computers reach higher levels of computing power and speed, they will be capable of breaking the public key cryptography algorithms that are in use today.” US....

Blockchain-based decentralized messengers: A privacy pipedream?

While blockchain messengers stand to mitigate many of the privacy issues posed by their centralized counterparts, they still have their fair share of unignorable issues. As people all over the globe have become increasingly aware of their privacy rights and how they are constantly being violated by various prominent social media platforms, the need for tangible, decentralized alternatives has continued to grow rapidly. For perspective, in 2019, Facebook was ordered to pay a mind-boggling $5-billion fine by the United States Federal Trade Commission for improperly acquiring private data of....

US Government Escalates Push for Post-Quantum Cryptography

Federal agencies of the US government are expanding their calls for quantum computing resistant encryption methods. In effect, the National Institute of Standards (NIST) recently announced a request for public-key post-quantum algorithms. This action follows warnings from the National Security Agency (NSA) about the risks of potential quantum-based....
