Last week, the Bitcoin network suffered from a denial-of-service attack that forced the core development team to patch the core reference design. Details are sketchy. CoinDesk first received word of the problem from core developer Jeff Garzik. "Currently dealing with an ongoing, network-wide event," he told us in a hurried email. Last Friday, Gavin Andreesen announced a forthcoming 0.8.3 release of the reference implementation. Bitcoin exchange BTE-C has reported via its official Twitter account that it is, at this time, experiencing a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack that may or may not be affecting all services. The uncertainty comes from the lack of explanation from BTC-E. The tweet, which only reads "DDos #btce" (pictured above), seemingly speaks for itself, however. Georgia-based CampBX has been having issues with their service since at least Thursday of last week, according to tweets transmitted by the crypto-currency exchange. Beginning on the 3rd of July, the company took to social media to report that their service was dealing with a DDOS attack. For those unfamiliar, a DDOS is a distributed denial of service attack. An attack of this nature overwhelms a target server/s with requests, making the service slow or even unreachable by legitimate users. A D-DoS attack is in progress.
