Lamassu Launches First Bitcoin Vending Machine in the United States
Bitcoin vending machine manufacturer Lamassu has hit another milestone with the launch of what is believed to be the first bitcoin vending machine in the United States of America (not to be confused with ATM). Located at the Imbibe cigar bar in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the machine sits right by the University of New Mexico - giving students and others who are curious easy access to purchasing the emerging digital currency. We've been calling the Lamassu bitcoin machine an ATM for some time, but we should properly correct ourselves and call it a bitcoin 'vending machine', because it does not exchange bitcoin-to-cash. Rather, you insert cash, and you get bitcoin sent to an address of your choosing. Bitcoin Automated Vending Machine (AVM) operator QwikBit announced on Friday news that they have signed a deal with Lamassu, which will make the company one of the largest operators of Lamassu bitcoin vending machines in the United Kingdom. Lamassu bitcoin vending machines are the most popular offerings amongst operators, with over 230 units in operation globally. Users of the machines can insert as little as £5 and receive bitcoin to a specified address in as little as thirty seconds. QwikBit, headquartered on the Isle of Man, says they are planning to roll out their network of AVMs....
Lamassu is busy at work on their vending machines, which have been a hit amongst operator start-ups around the world. In late December, the company announced the sale of their 100th machine, which allows users to pay for bitcoin with fiat in as little as thirty seconds. The company is now projecting they'll deliver their 200th machine by May of this year, with at least one device on six of the seven continents (we're waiting for the day one turns up in Antartica). MIT’s Media Lab unveiled a vending machine that accepts bitcoin with a quirky twist — it was stocked solely with Soylent. Soylent and Bitcoin? A picture of the vending machine was tweeted out by MIT’s own Ethan Zuckerman last night. In it, you can see the machine was mostly empty aside from a few bottles of Soylent. The vending machine even comes equipped with a QR code for people to conveniently scan. There's a whole lot of firsts in the realm of bitcoin - and today, another. The first bitcoin vending machine is slated to hit the Temple Bar district in Dublin, Ireland in the next few days.
