Bitcurex Trading Comes Back Online Following Attack
Following an attack that brought trading at Polish exchange to a grinding halt late last week comes the news that the exchange has resumed service as of a couple of hours ago (noontime, Polish time) for clients trading with the Polish Zloty. For clients trading with the Euro, trading shall be resumed on the 20th of March, this Thursday, also at noontime, according to Bitcurex. User passwords have been reset, and the exchange is asking clients to use the "password reminder" function to obtain their login credentials. Bitcurex, one of Poland’s largest exchanges has shut shop after a reported 2300 BTC ($ 1.5 mln) theft. The polish exchange was one of the oldest in the country. Before the website of Bitcurex was taken down, a message was posted by the administrators in Polish which translated reads: “On 13.10.2016 as a result of third-party systems service www.bitcurex.com/ www.bitcurex.com damaged by external interference in automated data collection and processing of information. This morning, it was noted that trading at Polish bitcoin exchange Bitcurex had halted trading temporarily due to issues. At the time it was immediately unclear that the cause of the downtime was related to a hack. In a follow-up statement, the company says they "successfully blocked a hacking attack," adding that "Thanks to automatic safety procedures, hackers manages to defraud only a portion of the funds stored in operational Hot Wallet Bitcurex." While some Bitcoin community members see this as a “curtain call” for Bitcurex, that doesn't seem to be the case. It is true not alerting platform users is no proper way of conducting business in the financial sector. Whenever a Bitcoin exchange platform shuts down, it is never a pleasant feeling.
