Without Segwit There is No Lightning Network

“There are a lot of people working on layer 2 solutions that are waiting for Segwit,” says Bitfinex Chief Security Officer Phil Potter in a discussion between core developers, bitcoin ecosystem participants and Bitcoin enthusiast Roger Ver. “If Segwit doesn’t happen, think of the downstream projects. There are eight or nine different Lightning projects being sponsored out there, which will be completely hamstrung without this — sure, we have some ways to do payment channels without Segwit, but we don’t have a trustless Lightning Network and the malleability fix is really helpful for that.....

ViaBTC Calls for a Bitcoin Hardfork

ViaBTC, which now controls around 15% of the network hashrate in combination with Roger Ver’s Bitcoin Unlimited pool, has called for a hardfork to upgrade bitcoin’s transaction capacity. “Drop the matter of SegWit, let’s hard fork together,” followed by a resounding no to the question of whether there is anything core could do to make ViaBTC support segwit, are just some of the public statements made by the new pool that has suddenly taken the fourth position in network hashrate distribution. I reached out to better understand the seemingly changing alignments in the great debate by asking....

That’s the question on top of the Bitcoin community members’ minds, especially with the whole scalability discussion still going on. One of the scalability solutions presented by the Bitcoin Core is SegWit. The Segregated Witness soft fork is expected to enable Lightning Network, which is already being worked upon by few developer groups. While some believe that SegWit and Lightning Network will ensure....

Why Segwit is Important For Trezor & Other Hardware Bitcoin Wallets

Segregated Witness (Segwit) is a scalability solution introduced to scale the bitcoin network and to eliminate transaction malleability. Bach Nguyen, community director of prominent hardware bitcoin wallet manufacturer Trezor, states that Segwit also serves an important role in maximizing security measures and efficiency of hardware bitcoin wallets. Since its introduction to the bitcoin community, Segwit has been praised for its ability to open doors for two layer solutions such as TumbleBit and Lightning Network (Lightning). It establishes infrastructure for innovative scalability and....

Coinbase’s CEO Calls for Segwit Activation

Brian Armstrong, CEO and co-founder of Coinbase, has called for the activation of segwit, a controversial protocol update of the bitcoin network which adds further transaction capacity while largely fixing transaction malleability to pave the way for the Lightning Network. Armstrong stated segwit is “prob[ably] the best path forward for bitcoin at this point,” before calling on everyone to “come together and move forward as an industry. Activating SegWit can help us get there and it has a number of good features.” His statement was in reply to Charlie Lee, Litecoin’s founder and Director....
