Inaugural Event of NYSSA Speaker Series Focuses on Bitcoin and Virtual Currency

The New York Society of Security Analysts has launched a new series called the “NYSSA Distinguished Speaker Series” which will feature major players in the industry presenting on pertinent financial issues.

In the first informative presentation, Nicholas Colas will discuss how bitcoin operates, its current uses, what it does well, and where it falls short at the “Bitcoin and Virtual Money—The Top 10 Things We Need to Know” on March 5, 2014.

Over the past year bitcoin has gone from a dark web science project to mainstream sensation. But what exactly is a bitcoin, what is it good for, and what future does the online “currency” really have? The doubters think bitcoin is worthless—a figment of the imagination for anarchists, drug dealers, and the Web 2.0 version of gold bugs. Its proponents claim it is a new form of money—stateless and run by an algorithm which assures a fixed supply. Which one has the story right?

We’re clearly in uncharted waters when it comes to bitcoin, so any conversation about its future must start with some essential facts and clear-eyed analysis. Nicholas J. Colas will provide finance professionals the analytical tools they need to understand the role the disruptive technology will play in sectors such as financial services and retail industries.

Nicholas J. Colas is a managing director and chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group. In this role, Colas is responsible for analyzing trends in the economy and financial markets. A seasoned Wall Street analyst and portfolio manager, he is charged with providing ConvergEx clients with in-depth market analysis and commentary through his daily Morning Markets Briefing. His morning notes cover wide-ranging issues and recently have included such topics as ETFs, gold, volatility, asset correlation, Eurozone troubles, Fed policy, and Lady Gaga.

“NYSSA Distinguished Speaker Series: Bitcoin and Virtual Money—The Top 10 Things We Need to Know” will be held on March 5, 2014 from 8:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. at NYSSA Conference Center, 1540 Broadway, Suite 1010, New York, NY 10036. The program is also available as a livestream.
