iNation releases unPassport, a back up consumer product for its secure document storage platform
iNation, one of the first companies to address the coming unbundling of the government services market, announced today the MVP release of their unPassport service for securely verifying and storing records onto the blockchain.
unPassport allows travelers to securely upload the first few pages of their passport to a cloud storage facility hosted on the Blockchain, a disruptive public ledger technology for the digital currency known as Bitcoin.
Once the digital passport pages are uploaded, the data is fully encrypted and a unique deterministic ‘hash’ file (a long string of numbers and letters) is created and automatically stored on the blockchain via our vendor BlockCypher. The actual encrypted passport image files and the file hash is then securely stored on distributed nodes using a cutting-edge peer-to-peer storage protocol known as IPFS. This data is accessible via the web from devices around the world.
“Not only is the process of making copies of your passport to give to someone inherently arduous and inconvenient, but it also lacks the built-in security and immutability that a blockchain-recorded passport back up offers consumer and business travellers alike”, explained Nathan Wosnack, co-founder and CCO of iNation.
“unPassport is utilizing cutting-edge technology to prevent fraud and digital ID theft by storing that data in a distributed manner while being simple enough for any non-technical person to use.”
Not only has unPassport has built a strong relationship with its technology vendors (BlockCypher and IPFS), but it is also actively seeking partnerships with travel sites to resell the unPassport as a value added service directly to consumers.
Existing projects addressing issues with managing identification and land titles are currently underway - including one being built as part of the iNation platform - to deal with the coming disintermediation of government services that have been traditionally centrally and often inefficiently managed.
“iNation is a pioneer in blockchain-based governance services and is bridging the gap between the Bitcoin world and the real-world. We’re very excited to be the first in the world to have a viable solution in place for global travelers, ” said Mr. Wosnack.
The U.S. Department of State currently recommends that before traveling internationally, individuals and business people make copies of their first few passport pages, and give those pages to someone who isn’t flying in the event their passport is either misplaced or stolen.
unPassport is available now at a variety of convenient price points for different user requirements.
